Around 3am GMT yesterday (Wednesday), Most our network services went offline, including our hub, website, radio and several other services. This was due to our dedicated server being suspended by the data center. After contacting the hosting company who then contacted the data center the server was found to be hosting an illegal bot that was scanning several major data centers looking for vulnerable dedicated servers to also infect.
“How was the bot there in the first place?” As a friend, I gave shells out to people I trusted for their own uses. Unfortunately a very spiteful person has overlooked my trust and it has now just cost me my network stability, and alot of $$$. This is why all shells that are not used for NixtrixIRC purposes are now bring removed. The bot was used as an attempt to harm our network and services. The bot was also used to attack several other websites and irc networks with a DOS (Denial of Service) attack. Although this bot was installed on our server, we do not take responsibility for the actions of this bot.
Also, this explains the stability issues we have had over the last few days. The rogue bot was using allot of the bandwidth we had available and this was what was causing triforce and equinox to split.
Furthermore we are now working hard to rebuild the services we provide, so please bare with us as there may be one or two more splits before the end of the night. We in advance, apologize for any problems this may cause for our users. We will be back to normal service soon.
